How to Study at Home During the Pandemic

Several measures implemented to curb the spread of coronavirus, but remote working, and studying from home have taken center stage. A 2020 study has proposed that 42% of the US labor force are working full-time remotely while approximately 93% of households with school-age children have resorted to some form of distance learning amid the pandemic. For many who are unfamiliar with studying from home, the new norm will prove quite challenging. Are you studying from home or require your children to continue their education despite school closures? Here's how to learn effectively while at home.

  1. Plan your day

It’s quite alarming how you can easily postpone watching a recorded lecture for later viewing. Ensure you dedicate your complete attention to the recorded class and avoid juggling them during periods when you are eating or hooked to your music. Plan the time you wake up, have your breakfast, and get dressed before you begin your studies. Failure to routinely plan may likely lead to, let's say, your break period eating into your next schedule. Ideally, have a time-table to appreciate what you are studying at every moment since some courses may be more favorable to learn within a particular time of the day.

How Many Steps Do I Need To Lose Weight?

You’ve probably heard about the 10,000 steps per day fitness challenge. First of all, does the step challenge support weight loss? It seems to be like a magic number that every fitness tracker suggests. But studies indicate that it isn’t linked to any medical knowledge. Instead, 10,000 steps act as an indicator of your activity level.

Secondly, it can be tricky to make time and space for a long walk in a tight schedule. So, of course, if you’ve got a step goal, you’d like to figure out how to speed up the process.

Even before that happens, though, you want to make sure that they are able to have a comfortable retirement. After working and raising a family, it's their turn to get some rest - or maybe spend some time having as much fun as possible. So how can you help your parents so that they can have the best retirement?

4 Tips for Moving Your Home with Children

Moving to a new house is stressful even at the best of times. You have to spend hours packing up your belongings, changing your address, and negotiating with shopping companies. You’ll have to figure out how to ship your car across the country (hint: use CarsRelo) and find a buyer for your current home. It takes up an enormous amount of time and money and will occupy your mind for months before the moving day. But when you have young children in tow, it can be even worse.

Spring Cleaning Tips: 3 Ways To Clean Out and Get Organized This Year

The tiny toys have been a challenge to declutter and organize!
First step was to gather all of them from all over the house!

After a year of staying at home and online shopping, homes are getting cluttered, and it’s time for a deep clean. Getting started may seem like a mammoth task, but with a little work, you can get your home in order just in time for spring.

Furniture

Large items like chairs, dressers, and rugs take up a lot of the room in your house, but they are often difficult to remove. Before you start throwing away these larger items, see if you can instead sell them. Sites like Arizona online auctions provide the option to help you sell your furniture. By selling your items online, you can avoid expensive disposal costs and potentially earn some money. Just be sure to clean up and check all the drawers before selling.

The Biggest Mom & Baby Trends Of 2021

2020 was a weird year for everyone, but for those of us that had a baby, or have a family to raise, it has been a wild ride. However, the good news is that you get ahead of the curve by checking out my guide to the biggest mom and baby trends of 2021, below.

More sustainable baby products

Sustainability is most definitely a watch-word in mom and baby trends this year. What that means is less of a focus on disposable items such as nappies, and wipes and more on good quality reusable ones that can be washed and used over and over again.

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/xs3WtSBvYvk" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

This focus on sustainability also means there will likely be a reduction in plastic toy use, and perhaps a move back to more traditional wooden toys. Something that fits well with the Montessori educational ethos.

Finally, when it comes to sustainability you can expect big changes in the Baby Food Industry as well. In particular, plant-based baby food is set to be big this year, not to mention packaging made from materials such as sugarcane pulp which can be recycled or composted as easily as any other biodegradable waste.

More gender-neutral clothing for baby

I know that gender reveals seem to be as popular as ever on social media, but 2021 may just be the year we see this trend start to shift. After all, there is a real conversation about gender going on right now, and many parents are reluctant to impose an identity onto their children that may not ring true for them as they get older.

With that in mind, expect to see more gender-neutral dressing and outfits in yellow, greens, and especially greys.

More deliberate screen time for the kids

2020 was the first year that many kids of all ages experienced online learning, and due to the constraints of the pandemic, we can largely expect this trend to continue.

Of course, this can be somewhat problematic to families that like to limit screen time. However, it is important to recognize that not all screen time is bad. Indeed, at the moment it is what is allowing our kids to maintain their friendships and their educational process.

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/cxyW12PjlW4" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Having said that, will the necessary increase in deliberate screen time, it may be wise to encourage other non-screen-based activities as well, especially ones that involve outdoor activities and exercise.

Outside parenting support

Let’s face it, parenting is hard, and I'm pleased to see that we as a society are finally beginning to acknowledge this. Indeed, instead of getting on with the task of parenting the kids alone, there is now a lot more support for those of us having a bad day, or struggling with longer-term problems like poor mental health.

I often find that one of the best places to go for support is other mommy bloggers, as many are wonderfully honest about the downs as well as the ups of parenthood. Then there are text and video call therapy services and there are even subs like r/breakingmom on Reddit that are specifically designed to be non-judgmental places of support and encouragement.

Encourage Your Kids To Go For What They Want In Life

In life, your kids are going to need to know how they should go about getting what they want. It’s not going to be a case of wandering through their days and demanding things, because this isn’t going to fly in the real world and it shouldn’t work for you either. But, that doesn’t mean that there isn’t a right way to do it. In this article, we’re going to be looking at some of the things that you should do to encourage your kids to go for what they want in life, without seeming like spoiled, entitled brats. If you would like to know more about this topic, then keep reading down below where you will find the information that you need.

The Art of Co-Parenting During or After a Separation

Image - CC0 License

It's easy to say that divorce is something that can make us feel like, as parents and as partners, we are a failure. But when it comes to making sure that you prepare for your children's future, you must remember that the art of co-parenting is about working together with your ex. If you have come to the decision of sharing the parenting of your children after a split there are some essential rules to make the arrangement easier for everybody. Let's show you some of the best approaches.

Speaking Positively About Your Ex

Something that we can all feel tempted to do, especially after they've hurt our feelings and our souls, is bad mouth them. But even if you think that your ex is someone who is more than keen to smear your reputation, you might be quite surprised as to how reserved they can be throughout the divorce process. Even if you consult divorce lawyers for men, throughout the process, you might be quite surprised as to how reserved and accommodating they are. And it's important that you both learn the fine art of keeping a lid on those visceral emotions. Not just for the sake of the divorce process, but what you say about your ex is something that your child will react to. They can also think this about themselves. And, the most important thing to remember when it comes to co-parenting is that your child still loves them as a parent. You bad mouthing them is going to be a dagger to your child's heart.

Keep the Rules in Both Households Consistent

For the sake of your children, they need structure and routine. Everything needs to be the same in both homes. It's about making sure that you both, as the child's parents, run a tight ship. This will make sure that you create a sense of security for the children. Wherever your child goes, and whenever they are, they will know that rules will be enforced. By operating in this respect, the children won't feel so insecure, which will result in a greater sense of well-being.

The Importance of Open Dialogue With Your Ex

Many marriages and relationships break down due to a lack of communication. By creating an open dialogue with your ex and keeping each other informed, it will make the relationship work. It can be emotionally painful, but making sure that you are both informed about the changes in your life or challenging circumstances will ensure that your child is never the key source of information. This is vital because if you ask your child what is going on in the other person's life, it is second-hand information, and it also results in putting your child in the middle. This is something that you will never, ever want to do.

As painful as it can be, you can make it work. The art of co-parenting during any separation is very much a fine one. It is not easy, but it is achievable.

Staying Responsible For Your Children's Future

Being a parent is hard - we all know that! Whether you’re working from home whilst looking after your children, or you’re juggling childcare and work-related needs at the same time, you’ve got it difficult! Getting through the day-to-day is a real achievement when you’ve got so much responsibility on your plate, but unfortunately, your work doesn’t end there.

There are so many future considerations to keep in mind whilst raising your kids to be good, safe, and kind people. After all, you’ve got to ensure your kids are ready for the world and to do that, you’ve got to have responsibility in mind at all times. And with that in mind, here are the top three things you’ll need to do right now to make sure your kids do well when they hit the age of 18 and beyond.

Teaching Your Children How to Handle Their Emotions

You don’t have to make your children happy at all times, of course, but you do need to show them what to do to handle their emotions. Handling emotions is a big deal, and a lot of adults can’t even do it! This is why it needs to be something you pass onto your children; teaching them to be productive with their feelings will lead to them being well-adjusted adults, and it’d certainly help them to stay close to you as they grow and become more independent.

Focusing on Your Children’s Financial Future

Of course, you can’t work for them, but you can set them up with the right habits (and the right background resources), to ensure your children spend and save well when they’re all grown up. Giving them their own bank account, which you control, is a good way to introduce them to such a concept in the long term.

You could also think a little more about taking out a life insurance policy - it’s a big step, but it’s a good idea if you’re not sure if your current savings would be enough to keep your family going if something happened to you. But you need to work with an insurance company you trust! For example, check out some National Life Group reviews before you buy anything, and be sure to compare what’s on offer with other companies.

Showing Your Children a Good Example

Finally, your own thoughts, actions, and behaviors come into it. You need to be the person they look up to and keep in mind when making decisions - you’re their whole world right now, and as they get older, they’ll take the lessons you give them to heart. Make sure you’re showing them to behave in a way you’d be proud of, and would ensure their health and happiness when they’re finally out there on their own two feet.

Your children need to learn a lot before they grow up and move out - make sure you keep the above ideas in mind as they grow, because they really matter!

10 Ways To Keep Busy In Quarantine

If you are having trouble finding ways to fill your time throughout quarantine then take a look at our suggestions below.

  1. Start a journal or blog

If you like writing, then why not think about starting a journal or blog. Writing down your thoughts and feelings can be very therapeutic. If you have an interest or hobby that you think other people would love to hear about then creating a blog online for people to read is the way forward.

How to Stay Relevant as a Work-From-Home Mom

Balancing work, parenting, and sometimes, even schooling at the same time can take a significant toll on work-from-home moms. The pressure to remain relevant in uncertain times, such as the pandemic season, is real and challenging. According to the US census department, working women make up 32% of all employed mothers in America. As significant as this is, it doesn’t take away the fact that you need to adopt measured strategies to remain relevant. Fortunately, we’ve created this list below to help.

  1. Be up to date with technology

For most women, the best technology is knowing how to operate a smartphone and a computer. If that is you, you’ll need an immediate paradigm shift on what technology is and how it influences your performance as a work-from-home mother. Make a deliberate attempt to get a basic understanding of digital systems and procedures used in the office, which aided your previous career. More importantly, now that your office setting is the home, apply this knowledge to enhance your performance.

Furthermore, because technology continues to evolve at lightning speed, you cannot afford to be left behind. Besides, there is a possibility your current status may change and would require going back to the office to work. There are simple but effective ways you can stay abreast with technology. For example, instead of using the traditional way (pen and paper) to record your expenses, try Google Sheets to input your monthly budget and track expenses.

Secondly, you can back up your phone’s operating system to cloud storage and learn the ins and outs of this digital method. The objective is to find innovative ways to optimize your knowledge in technology and digital systems.

  1. Enroll in professional development classes

This shouldn’t be too difficult to do, especially when you understand why you must do it. Staying at home to work does not in any way take you out of the labor force. The only difference is where you operate from, even though that includes keeping your toddler from punching your computer’s keypad. Staying relevant in your profession is almost synonymous with self-development. Education is a continuous process; this explains why people who look forward to upgrading their skills prioritize further learning.

Fortunately, several universities and colleges in the US have made a significant commitment to moving some courses online. Some examples are:

  • Baylor University (Texas)

  • Simmons University (in Massachusetts)

  • University of Denver (in Colorado)

Courses such as digital marketing, business writing, design, communication, and languages are useful in your career development. Another virtual course currently making waves is the Masters’ in social work program. If you have a passion for helping people and communities, then maybe you can learn more about an online msw program. The universities listed above (and more in the US) offer this program, and you will find it convenient to study at your pace.

  1. Set realistic goals for yourself (daily, weekly, monthly)

Wouldn’t you have set daily targets for yourself if you were working from the office? Then working from home shouldn’t be any different. Targets are meant to guide you and prevent you from losing focus. So, whether you have to hook your tiny tot to the hip and type your work to meet deadlines, that’s what you’ve got to do. Nonetheless, take it easy on yourself by planning your day and setting realistic goals. How can you do this?

First, make a list of every important task you need to complete in a day. Remember to group them in the order of ‘important and urgent’ and ‘important but not urgent.’ This guideline will set the platform to tackle urgent tasks while making time to finish with those that aren’t. Admittedly, this is not easy to do with kids in the home.

However, if your significant other is available, plan with them to help you both fulfill your work and home responsibilities. If it’s just you, you could consider starting your day several hours before the kids wake up in the morning. Whatever works for you, the fundamental principle is to minimize or eliminate non-performance.

  1. Take needed breaks and set flexible schedules into your routines

Not everyone can control their work hours and keep it strictly free from interruptions. For work-from-home moms, you may need a magic wand for that. This is when you should build some flexibility in your work schedules. Without it, you have a higher chance of losing focus on work and affecting your relevance as a professional working from home.

A flexible schedule should include using your breaks to attend to pressing home and childcare responsibilities. For example, feeding the kids, doing the dirty dishes, or other chores you deem necessary. Indeed, taking breaks from work gives your brain a chance to rest and rejuvenate. It creates the needed balance you require to be effective in your professional life.

It is not an easy path to take, but with your tenacity, you will be happy with your achievements. Avoid getting into a routine that downplays your importance and renders you ineffective, especially in your career or side hustle. Hopefully, these points will help you stay relevant as a work-from-home mom.

How to Sell Your House Fast During the Pandemic

Surely, the pandemic has brought a wave of change to the world. To say that it has affected every industry is an understatement. It forced a lot of adjustment on the part of sellers and buyers.

While it is not entirely impossible to sell a house nowadays, it is not without a challenge. And it is a further challenge for sellers to get someone to quickly get a deal for their home without cutting the price in half.

But some ways can help sell your house fast during the pandemic. Here are some things to consider.

Home Moving Matters That Everyone Forgets About

Moving home can be time-consuming and expensive. Juggling the end of one tenancy and the start of a new one or both the sale and purchase of two properties is often stressful. You might not be able to take any time off for it, and you have a lot of things to do to get it all sorted. Moving with kids or pets can complicate things further, and it's especially tricky if you're moving a longer distance. Forgetting to do a number of tasks is easy, but it could put you at a disadvantage. So what should you remember to do when planning and carrying out your move?

Compare Moving Quotes

Booking movers isn't something that you want to do too soon, especially as you want to make sure you know how much you have to move. But you also don't want to leave it too late if you want to save money and get everything organized. Comparing quotes from several companies is the right thing to do if you want to avoid spending too much. You can either go straight to a company like Allied Van Lines for a quote or use a comparison or quote service to get several quotes at once. Don't leave this task too late. You want time to make a decision and book your movers.

Create a Schedule and To-Do List

Creating a schedule for your move isn't necessarily something you have to do, but it's definitely going to make your move a lot easier. You'll know when you need to be out of your current property, when you can move into your new one, and when you have to start packing. A to-do list will give you all of the tasks that have to be completed so that you can schedule them on a timeline that suits you.

Easily Accessible Items for Your First Night

When you arrive in your new place, you don't want to have to hunt around for plates, bedding or other important items that you'll need on your first night there. Once you've got everything inside, you probably don't want to start packing or assembling furniture right away. So be sure to have easily accessible items for the first day or so, including things to eat and drink from and everything that you need to go to bed and get up in the morning. That could include your shower stuff, a change of clothes, and breakfast items.

Notifying Important People and Organizations

Moving home means telling a lot of people that you're moving. While most people do remember to do this, they often leave it until the very last minute - and there might be some people you forget about. Make a list of everyone you need to tell, from friends and family to bill companies, work, your kids' schools, and anyone else that might need to know your new address.

Don't forget about these important tasks when you move home if you want to keep your move as organized as possible.

4 Ways To Guarantee Your Products Are Safe And Protected

Get Insurance

If you want to ensure that you don’t suffer a financial loss regardless of what happens to your products, it’s important to make sure that you do have the right insurance coverage in place. There are various different types of insurance for you to explore as a business owner. You might, for instance, want to think about getting property insurance. This could be useful if you are worried about your stock getting damage due to your warehouse collapsing in a storm or potentially even getting flooded. This is a real possibility at certain times of the year.

Choose The Right Logistics Team

One of the main times you can run into a problem with your products will be during deliveries. You need to make sure that deliveries are taken care of the right way. This will always require you to choose the right logistics team, particularly if you are outsourcing.

If you are outsourcing in your business, then it’s best to check out reviews and case studies of a few different businesses before settling on the right one for your company. The main issue that you might have with your logistics service is deliveries arriving late. However, it’s also possible that your drivers will steal the products as Amazon found last year. Tracking can help avoid this issue.

Packaging

When you’re thinking about deliveries, you also need to ensure that you are choosing the right packaging. There are various different types of packaging that could be suitable for your business products. This is just a matter of choosing wisely. You do need the packaging to be durable and ensure that products will be delivered safely into the hands of customers and clients. While some logistics services will provide packaging for you this won’t be true in all cases.

Make The Right Choice With Storage

The first step is to ensure that you are making the right choice with the storage option for your products. Be aware that there are a variety of different possibilities available to you here. For instance, you could think about renting or even buying a warehouse. Alternatively, you may wish to explore an option like Lone Star Storage trailers. With this possibility, you will have a trailer that you can use on the site of your business to extend your storage space. This could be a useful way to get the service you need without running into higher costs for storage.

We hope this helps you understand some of the key ways that you can ensure that your products are safe and protected in your business model. In doing so, you can guarantee that your business is on the right track and avoid losing money due to lost stock or inventory.

4 Common Household Pests and How to Get Rid of Them

Pixabay

No one wants an unexpected intruder in their home, but it happens often. Many people experience household pests in their homes or gardens that cause destruction, create mess, and pose a general nuisance for all residents.

Even if you don't currently have any pests in your home, it is always worth knowing what steps to take to remove the most common household pests. This way, if they ever make an unwanted appearance, you will have the knowledge required to banish them as quickly as possible.

With this in mind, here are four of the most common household pests and how to get rid of them.

Ants

If you’ve ever left sticky sweet food out in the open, you’ve probably had the unpleasant experience of seeing a swarm of opportunistic ants descending on the tasty treat. If there are ants in your home, the first thing you should do is play detective and determine a cause, as it’s likely they have been attracted by some spilled food or drink. Once you have cleared this food away, you will want to put something down to repel them. You can buy ant killers from any garden center or hardware store, but if you prefer a more natural solution, a dilution of peppermint oil and water will do the trick.

Moths

Moths are one of the most irritating pests you can have in your home because they are difficult to catch and they eat holes in your clothes, as well as dry goods like bread and pasta. The best thing you can do to prevent moths from entering your home is to keep it clean at all times, as moths are attracted by dust and dirt. This means vacuuming floors and dusting surfaces regularly. You could also buy pantry moth traps to protect your food or spray cedar oil around your home to repel them. Make sure you wash any clothes that have been attacked by moths to ensure you destroy and eggs or larvae that might have been left behind.

Raccoons

These furry creatures might look cute, but they can cause significant damage to your home if you're not careful. Like most pests, raccoons are attracted by food, so you should ensure the area around your home is clear of anything that might be attractive. This includes unsecured ins, pet food, or fruit from trees. Reduce potential nesting sites by clearing your backyard of debris such as woodpiles, and consider putting a fence around your perimeter to prevent them from entering.

Spiders

If you’re an arachnophobe, unearthing a spider infestation in your home is probably one of your worst nightmares. But with the right tips and tricks, they are easy to remove. There are several scents and chemicals that these eight-legged creatures absolutely detest, so try and infuse your home with scents of cinnamon, peppermint, and eucalyptus to deter them. Sprinkling some diatomaceous earth around areas where spiders frequent will kill them instantly, and if all fails, consider buying a cat to hunt them down.
