5 Tips for Combatting Insomnia and Getting Better Sleep

Apparently, I used to have the Magic Mommy Touch for getting my kidlets to sleep

If there is one thing many of us take for granted in life, it’s getting enough sleep each night. Waking up feeling restless and exhausted will impact your day ahead, potentially causing problems in your professional and personal endeavors. However, for those with insomnia, not getting any sleep at all can have serious consequences on your health.

Insomnia affects millions of UK adults, so if you fall into this category, here are some tips on conquering the sleep disorder and getting a good night’s sleep.

Create a Sleep Schedule

If you’re one of many people who lead a hectic schedule, your sleeping pattern may be all over the place, which isn’t good for your internal body clock. For those who are going to sleep and waking up at different times, it’s no wonder you’re having trouble with getting a good night’s rest. To promote better sleep, developing a routine and sticking to it is essential.

Avoid Caffeine

Many of us love our cups of coffee throughout the day. However, when it comes to nighttime, drifting off and going into a deep sleep can be difficult. This is because caffeine stimulates your brain and keeps you active, meaning you will have a hard time relaxing and unwinding before bedtime. If you can, it’s best to avoid caffeine, but if you can’t get through the day without some, try not to consume any after 2pm.

Don’t Drink Alcohol Before Bed

Some insomniacs believe that having an alcoholic drink before bed relaxes them and promotes better sleep, but it actually does the complete opposite. For those who drink in excess, you may experience poorer sleep which can have all kinds of effects on your day ahead. It’s recommended to not drink alcohol before bed, otherwise, you won’t get the crucial REM sleep you need.

Consider CBD Oil

You may have already heard of the benefits that CBD oil can potentially bring. Whether it’s reducing anxiety, depression, or stopping acne, CBD oil may also be able to help with combatting insomnia. Although more research is needed, past studies have indicated that CBD oil may help individuals fall asleep and stay asleep. Exercise Earlier

Regular physical activity is imperative for your mental and physical health. Exercise is known to boost cardiovascular health, help you manage your weight better, and improve your outlook on life. When it comes to getting a good night’s sleep, exercise can play a key part. However, you must stick to working out earlier in the day. If you think exercising before bed will help to relax you, think again. You must allocate a few hours in between exercise and sleep so that your body has time to unwind. During this period, your adrenaline levels, body temperature, and heart rate will drop, helping to get you ready for a good night’s rest.

Falling asleep and staying asleep is easier said than done for some of us. If you are suffering from insomnia, any of the tips above should help in getting you a better night’s sleep.
