The Secret To A Perfect Complexion

Having a perfect complexion is a dream come true for many people. Many try all kinds of regimens and have read almost every magazine and blog post about the secrets of perfect skin, but have never gotten any closer to that. This is despite drinking lots of water, putting on sunscreen, and removing makeup just before bed. Although most people (myself included) follow some of these tips to the letter, they still suffer from dryness, sensitivity, acne, and breakouts.

Taking proper care of your skin, following the right dieting regimen, and exercising regularly can, however, help you have smooth and radiant skin.  The key to a perfect complexion lies with how well you take care of your skin, among other things.  You only need to make it a habit of caring for it to experience many of the remarkable benefits. You will even never have to worry about premature aging, dry skin, or acne breakouts.  Outlined below are the top 10 skincare solutions for that perfect complexion, courtesy of Kate Somerville.

1.         Apply Sunscreen Daily
Kate advises against leaving your skin exposed to direct sunlight for too long. Most skin-related conditions are caused by prolonged exposure to sun rays and UV rays.  UV radiation affects the skin by causing skin cells to degrade while affecting how well the body produces elastin and collagen. With the body unable to produce enough elastin and collagen, your skin starts getting wrinkles, stretch marks, and is even vulnerable to breakouts.

Applying some sunscreen each time you head out, however, protects you from these harmful rays. Be sure to apply sunscreen with at least 30 SPF for the best results. Don't just use sunscreen when headed to the beach or in summer; do this every day, which includes deep into winter when the sun doesn't seem to appear. UV rays penetrate even the darkest clouds. This will also help you avoid freckles and other pigmentation. However, if you are heavily pigmented then try http://www.dore.sg/pigment-removal/

2.         Use The Right Skin Care Products
Get to know your skin type first before using any skin care or beauty product.  Is your skin dry, oily, or a combination of the two? If determining your skin type seems too much, you can then seek the services of a dermatologist for help. According to Kate, the dermatologist should be able to identify your skin type, as well as any other blemish you may have. For instance, some people may have an oily forehead with dry cheeks. In this instance, you will be required to use two different products to achieve the best results. Proper hydration is the key to a perfect complexion, she says.

3.         Exfoliate
You should exfoliate at least two times in a week. It is by exfoliating that you get to remove dead skin, excess oil, and dirt that may be keeping the pores clogged. Individuals under the age of 30 should exfoliate at least twice per week while those older need to exfoliate 3 or 4 times depending on the need. One of the main advantages of exfoliation (besides removing dead skin cells) is it also helps stimulate increased blood flow to the skin.

According to Kate, the best exfoliation formula is made of fruit enzymes and gentle to the skin. You need to stay away from products with sharp seeds, and nuts, for these do bruise or damage the skin. Natural enzyme-based exfoliating formulates work by dissolving the dead skin thus making it relatively easy to remove efficiently. She also recommends exfoliating with steam, as steam helps keep the skin warm and well moisturized. ExfoliKate is one of the products she recommends.

4.         Work On Your Neck Too
The neck needs to be taken care of properly as well. The same elements that affect your face affect it as well. It would therefore be advisable to use the same products you use on your face on the neck as well. This includes the moisturizer, sunscreen, and massage. Be sure to massage the neck using an upward motion to create a lifting effect. Remember to moisturize every day just before going to bed and after waking up.

5.         Use Filtered Water
Drinking plenty of water is a sure way to ensure skin cells are properly hydrated. While this is essential, you may want to know what impurities or chemicals your drinking water contains. Although the local water supply may claim it is fit for human consumption, Kate recommends taking the extra step to filter the water as well. A home water filtration system should make the work much easier, and is affordable too.  Asking your water supplier for data about contents in your water could be helpful as well. Nevertheless, adding a home purifier or filtration system should help remove certain impurities and metals. Some chemical and toxic materials may, however, be hard to filter out.

6.         Be Careful With Coffee, Alcohol, and Dairy Intake
Although some foods may seem healthy, they may be the reason you have acne breakouts or any other skin condition. Dairy products, for instance, can trigger or worsen acne. Heavy coffee intake, on the other hand, could dehydrate the skin leaving it vulnerable to stretch marks. Alcohol, on the other hand, causes aging over time, hence should be taken with caution. To be on the safe side, consider going for red wine (rich in resveratrol) as it combats aging signs, as well as reduce coffee intake to just two cups per day.

7.         Take Vitamin Supplements
Vitamin supplements are essentially needed for proper skin cell development and a smoother skin. Some of the supplements you need to focus on include:

a.         Vitamin A: Vitamin A is essentially needed to facilitate skin repair, as well as reinforce cell membranes and tissues.  This protects skin cells against viruses and bacteria. Vitamin A also helps prevent skin wrinkles, flaky and dry skin, and acne.

b.         Calcium: Calcium is needed for proper cell development and good health. It also helps reduce the risk of skin cancer and premature aging signs.

c.         Vitamin C: Vitamin C is largely needed for the formation of collagen. Collagen is the main compound responsible for skin elasticity and tissue recovery. It also helps fight free radicals.

d.         Flaxseed and fish oil supplements: These are rich sources of omega-3 fatty acids. Omega fatty acids are needed to promote cell hydration and enable cells to hold on to moisture. These work together with hyaluronic acids for a smoother skin and even complexion.

8.         Double Cleanse
Makeup is only meant to mask some of the skin blemishes you might have. This, however, doesn't mean you should sleep in your makeup. Make it a point to remove makeup the first thing before going to bed. You'll also need to do a double cleanse and especially if had applied heavy makeup. Double cleansing ensures all the dust and impurities are removed entirely.

9.         Pop That Pimple Properly
While you shouldn't pop a pimple open, you'll need to pop it correctly if you have/need to. You'll need the right supplies to get this done. First, you will need a cleanser, exfoliator, cotton swabs or tissue, washcloth, Neosporin, and witch hazel.  The procedure involves first cleaning the area, exfoliating, then squeezing blackheads gently with cotton swabs. You can then move to whiteheads gently to remove the blemish underneath it.  Squeeze the base of the blemish to get rid of the infection.

10.       Get Facials Regularly
Just because you have the right skin care products and routine at home doesn't mean you are doing everything right. You need to seek the services of a competent aesthetician once in a while.  Getting facials regularly will help address areas and issues you probably cannot handle correctly. According to Kate, one should get a facial at least once in 6 weeks.  You may need to get facials more often if you have a blemish, such as an acne infection.  Seeing a dermatologist to help treat a particular skin condition would also be recommended before getting the facials.

Get More Space Out Of Your Home

Between the stuff you’ve collected from a lifetime of retail therapy and the kids you’ve accumulated,
you may have noticed your home has started to feel a little more, how do we say, compact. It may
have even got to the stage where you’ve thought about moving to a bigger house just to enjoy a little
bit of breathing space again.

But what if there were some easier solutions than upping sticks?

Mmm hmmm. Pop your head into any interior designer’s office and they’ll tell you that being smarter
with your space is the best way to make your home feel a dollop larger - big enough to cope with
your hoarding problem and growing brood.

Read on for our favorite ways to increase the living space in your home and hold off that need to
move:

1. Multifunctional Rooms Are Essential
When space is not the luxury it once was, you need to dismiss the idea of having separate rooms
for everything and embrace the modern trend of multifunctional rooms. That could mean having a
kitchen diner to create space for a living room, or integrating your home office into the corner of your
bedroom. Anything that will free-up a pinch of extra space.

2. Look For The Dead Space
Every home is full of dead spots that are just gagging to be transformed into clever storage options.
Seriously. You’ll be flabbergasted by just how many parts of your home are suitable for this. The
space under your stairs, the walls either side of a door (and the space above the door), beneath your
windows - so many spaces.

3. Give Wasted Spaces A Reason
If you were to take a speedy stroll around your home, you’ll stumble across loads of wasted areas
that need repurposing. Your damp basement could become somewhere special with a
unique waterproofing system, your attic could become a bedroom with some added insulation
and your landings could be a storage goldmine with the addition of some bespoke cabinets. They’re
all simple solutions that will give your home tons of extra space.

4. Get In The Garden
When space is limited in your home, don’t undervalue the importance of your garden. It’s one of
the best ways of liberating some of that breathing space you crave. Sheds, summerhouses, storage
boxes, bike stores - anything like this can quickly become the solution for your cluttered home.

5. Spare Rooms Are Overrated
Spare rooms are all good and well if you are constantly fending off different guests, but if you only
have people pop by three weekends a year then you are far better off changing the sofa in your
living room for a sofa bed. Not only will this free up an entire room in your home to be used for
something more practical, you’ll also be able to surprise your guests with how comfy sofa beds
have become in the past few years. They’re incredible.

Space, it’s already in your house. You just need to know where to look for it, how to use it and then
start to enjoy it. That’s all.

From One Home To A New One

Making the transition from one home to a new one is a stressful situation. But it is also the
chance for a new beginning. Think of moving from one home to a new one as an adventure,
and one that can be explored and enjoyed with the whole family. Don’t get us wrong, considering
a move when you’ve got a family in tow is just adding to the stress. But to try and make your
new little adventure a bit less stressful, we’ve got some stress busting tips for you and the
whole family.

Find A Time That Suits You

The main reason why so many people struggle with a home move is because they just don’t
pick the right time to do it. Sometimes there is an urgent need for a move. It might be the need
to move for work, family issues, or something as negative as being evicted from a rented home
due the landlord not wishing to rent it out any more. But often moves are pre planned, and
there is no apparent reason for moving other than the fact a change of scenery is needed, or
because a new house has been found that looks bigger and better. But, rushing into a move
like this can just be one of the worst things you can do. It isn’t just a case of packing a few boxes
and moving down the road. It’s a very long, costly, and stressful process. A move should always
be done at a time that suits you to reduce stress. It could be when the kids are off school, once
you’ve had time to save and prepare, or once you know for sure that a move is the best idea for
you and you’re not just doing it out of greed for a bigger house.

Find A Company To Support You

Half the hassle that people have with a move is the companies they chose to help them. There
are multiple different people that are going to be involved. You’ve got the ones involved with
moving to begin with, and any delays in having your items delivered can be an absolute
nightmare. What you need to do is check out companies such as shiply, make sure they can
deliver on the exact days that you need, and make sure that they have a good enough reputation.
Then there’s going to be the solicitors that will help you with the paperwork. Again, these can
just be an absolute nightmare for timings and making sure that things are done right. Plus, a
lot of them charge an absolute fortune! So just make sure you’re doing your research and
everything should be fine.

Find Inspiration For Decor

The last thing you need to think about is what you want the house to actually look like. It’s
rare that you’ll go into a home and actually find decor that you like the look of, and so you’re
left with the task of stripping it all down and going again. Use websites to give you inspiration,
and even check out showrooms to see what the latest styles are.

Runs/Walks in Kansas City: Rock the Parkway April 14, 2018

Get ready for this half marathon or 5K walk/run on April 14, 2018 along scenic Ward Parkway. I love love love Ward Parkway and have ever since I was a kid in the 1970s. The gorgeous, historic houses, Meyer Circle, Ward Parkway shopping center all hold memories for me. My dad used to deliver mail along and off of Ward Parkway and I always loved driving over to find him to surprise him on his route.

Unfortunately, I can't make this one, although I am about ready to dive back into a half marathon sometime this year (walking, not running).

I'll be posting upcoming walk/runs in Kansas City as I find them. This does not mean I'll be participating in all of them, so don't show up expecting me to sign autographs or anything. I MIGHT or MIGHT NOT be there, depending on household funds at the time (it costs to enter a race), Mr. Kerrie's travel situation, my sanity level, etc. Enjoy the race info, and go out and find some in your town!

What: Rock the Parkway

When: Saturday, April 14, 2018

Where: Burns and McDonnell start ... 9400 Ward Parkway ... the map shows the race only going to 83rd (the 5K) while the half marathon goes to 51st Street. Man, I wish I could do a 14-minute mile but my current best is about 20

Click here for race details and to enter to participate.

I get much of my info from KC Running Company

On a personal note, here's my walking story for National Walking Day a couple of years ago with an update.

When you're all done, you'll be hungry! Grab a copy of my Tater Tot Casserole Cookbook and whip up a batch of happiness for dinner!

Mementos To Show Your Love

Mementos are thoughtful gifts to give to friends, family, or significant others. There are certain moments in life when giving a memento will help show your love for that particular person. This is an item that serves as a reminder of an event or a person but can also be something that is given as a gift for a particular occasion. It shows that you care, are listening, and how thoughtful you are at other times. A few factors to consider are the age of the person receiving the gift, their personality, the usage out of the gift and the thoughtfulness of the keepsake. Certain occasions call for funny gag gifts, whereas in others it is inappropriate. The gifts must always be tailored to both the person and the event at hand.

For different ages
Different gifts or keepsakes will be given at different ages. Different age groups and different occasions call for different gifts. A baby wouldn’t use a cellphone, just like a young adult wouldn’t require a baby bottle. Younger children love receiving toys, whereas the adults may prefer useful gifts.

To different people
In addition to keeping age in mind, different people will receive different gifts. For instance, something you would gift your sister or brother would be different to something you would gift to a niece, nephew, child, or even significant other. Keep your audience in mind when purchasing a memento or gift.

Tailoring to personality
Everyone has a different personality, thus it’s important to tailor a memento or gift to a particular personality. Consider what the receiver likes and dislikes. This will further show that the gift was thought out and that you even listen to the other person. For instance, if they have a fun and bubbly personality, then they would enjoy something lighthearted.

The usage
Will the item you are gifting be used? When it comes to birthday celebrations and even holiday parties, it’s beneficial to the receiver to get a gift they will use. Think about practical presents, such as an umbrella, cookbook, slippers, and so on.

Thoughtful keepsake
Not all moments in life are happy. Life is made up of a lot of events, some happy and joyful, and others sad. It’s all a part of life. During the hard times in life, showing you care can go a long way. This can be demonstrated through how you act, but can also be shown in the form of a keepsake. Should someone you know have lost a loved one, you can gift him or her a Paint Your Life memento. Keeping the memory of a loved one forever alive, you can have a custom hand painted portrait be created. This will keep their spirit forever immortalized in a painting, and it is a good gesture to make.

Little or big mementos can show your appreciation for a person and that you care. While something as simple as a nice gesture can show your love, so can gifting a thoughtful gift during particular situations or events. There is no need to break the bank, either, to give a memento that your friend, family or significant other will love.
