5 Ways to Care for Your Dog

Dogs are among the best company a human can have. That is why they are the most popular pet worldwide. When you decide to be a dog owner, you have to ensure you take good care of it. You have to learn the basics of dog care like when to take it to the vet, what to feed it, proper grooming, and exercising it. All these are for the health and happiness of your furry friend. Fortunately, these are easy things to do. Here are five basic ways to care for your lovely pet.

Nutrition

Your dog needs a healthy and balanced diet for survival—research food companies that produce quality dog food with ingredients that meet a dog's nutritional needs. Also, ensure that you feed your dog something it enjoys. Some companies offer samples you can try before buying the product. While on nutrition, it is also important to check which foods you cannot give a dog. Some include chocolate, avocado, alcohol, onion, garlic, macadamia nuts, grapes, and raisins. These foods are toxic to your little friend and can lead to gastrointestinal issues or even death.

Regular Exercise

Dogs need to play regularly to stay healthy and happy. Every day, ensure that your dog gets at least a 30-minute walk. If your dog has a lot of energy, you may need more than that. The amount of exercise a dog requires is dependent on its age, health, breed, and overall energy levels. Younger, energetic dogs require more exercise than older dogs. Also, look for parks in your area where you can remove the leash and let the dog run free for a while.

Its Own Space

Dogs are social beings that love being around humans. If you choose for your dog to stay indoors, have an area in the house that is specifically its own. You can go with custom made dog kennels, crates, or a simple bed. This is where the dog can go when it wants to be alone. If the dog is outside most of the time, get a temperature-controlled doghouse where it will be comfortable.

Groom Your Dog

Part of taking proper care of your dog is through proper grooming. Dogs do not need to bathe as much as humans do, but you should still wash them at least every couple of weeks. Also, get a gentle shampoo specifically made for dogs and use warm water. While at it, a dog's fur needs to be brushed once in a while, and when the hair is too much, get it trimmed. Do not forget to trim the nails as well when they are too long.

Schedule Routine Vet Check-ups

Dogs need regular check-ups to ensure they are in good health and detect problems early. A check-up can include a physical exam, a heartworm test, and a fecal check. Even if you do not go to the vet regularly, know when you should. Ensure that the dog has also been immunized as this will keep them happy and healthy.

Any time you are not sure about what your dog needs, get advice from a vet. Most vets are invested in the health and happiness of animals and will be glad to answer whichever questions you have.
