Types Of Roofing And Their Benefits

Whether you are commissioning for the building of your home or you are replacing the roof on your home, there are many roofing options. It all depends on the look you are going for and the type of protection you are needing to receive. Here are the different types of roofing materials and their benefits.

Solar Tiles

Also known as solar tiles, these fit easily and inconspicuously into existing shingles on your roof. They are extremely environmentally friendly and they can lower your energy costs as they generate up to one kilowatt of energy per 100 square feet. If you live in a very sunny region, have a very sunny roof or you live in a homeowner’s association that forbids solar panels, installing solar tiles to your roof is a great alternative.

Asphalt Shingles

These are by far the most common roofing materials because they are effective and efficient for all types of environmental conditions. They are also cheaper to buy upfront, but they can be a little high maintenance as they will need to be replaced after 20 years. They may not protect against hail unless you install impact resistant shingles which can typically cost more than the regular ones.

Metal Roofing

These are a great option if you live somewhere that receives a lot of snow. They are relatively durable, lasting about 60 years and they are great for getting rid of snow and rain. Metal roofing also will not burn and they resist high winds. You can also get metal roof EMF shielding, which protects you and your house from electromagnetic field radiation. This type of roofing material is lightweight and can be installed over your existing roof. The only thing to be cautious about is the fact that your metal roof can make rainstorms very noisy and if it hails, your roof may dent.

Slate

This roofing material is extremely durable as it can last more than 100 years. It will not burn, it is waterproof and it also resists mold and fungus. If you live somewhere that experiences wet climates, this is the ideal roofing material for your home or building. Slate roofing is very expensive, heavy and may be broken if stepped on.

Stone-Coated Steel

Stone-coated steel roofing mimics slate, clay or shingles because of its interlocking panels. This type of roofing material resists damage caused by things like heavy rains, strong winds, uplifting, hail and freeze-thaw cycles making this it a perfect option for those living in wet and windy areas as well as areas that are vulnerable to wildfires.

Clay And Concrete Tiles

If you live in an area that gets a lot of tornados or hurricanes, this type of roofing material is best for your home or building. Clay and concrete tiles can endure the most severe damage from tornadoes, hurricanes and winds of up to 125 miles per hour. They can even withstand earthquakes. Clay and concrete roof tiles are ideal for those in warm, dry climates.
