Assisted Living Checklist: Things to Check for in an Assisted Living Facility

Assisted living facilities vary greatly in terms of cost, services offered, types of homes available to residents, location, climate, and more. It’s easy to see how looking for the right assisted living facility can be overwhelming. However, there are a few things that one should look for in every assisted living facility before choosing one.

  • Licensure. An assisted living facility should be licensed by the state’s designated licensing board. Licensure ensures that the facility is clean, up-to-code, has properly trained and licensed staff, and emergency plans (such as for a fire) in place.
  • Culture. For many, an assisted living facility does not just become home, but it is also often the final resting place of aging seniors. That’s why it’s really important that before deciding on a facility, that the culture of the facility is vetted. For example, for some seniors, they will be most comfortable in a religious environment, and would benefit from faith-based assisted living facilities. Other facilities, such as assisted living in Orlando, work hard to create cultures centered around well-being and happiness.
  • Emergency Plans. Finally, before choosing a facility, it’s important to look for solidified plans they have in the case of a medical emergency of your loved one, and non-medical emergencies. Does every room have an emergency call button? How does staff contact family in the case of an emergency? For non-medical emergencies such as a fire or hurricane, does the staff have a safety plan in place that they have practiced? Knowing the emergency plans of a facility are very important to the decision-making process.

My Experience on ADHD Medication as an Adult

I was officially diagnosed ADD at the age of 49 back in August of 2020. Everybody already knew it; I just wanted the confirmation.

Here's a quote that sums ADD/ADHD up from the book Delivered from Distraction: Getting the Most out of Life with Attention Deficit Disorder by Edward M. Hallowell, M.D., and John J. Ratey, M.D.:

"Having ADHD makes life paradoxical. You can super-focus sometimes, but also space out when you least mean to. You can radiate confidence and also feel as insecure as a cat in a kennel. You can perform at the highest level, feeling incompetent as you do so. You can be loved by many, but feel as if no one really likes you. You can absolutely, totally intend to do something, then forget to do it. You can have the greatest ideas in the world, but feel as if you can't accomplish a thing."

I wanted to share some posts and helps I found on the web when I first started taking Ritalin at the start of December 2020 because being ADD does not mean you can't be successful in life and in business. These are not things you're going to find on that insert your pharmacist gives you with the bottle of pills; this is information from real people who have taken it. Real experiences.

4 Ways You Can Make Your Household Comfy For Your Elderly Relative

https://unsplash.com/photos/rti3HfYJzOM

When we fix up our homes, we often think about the aesthetics and the function, of course. We often think solely about ourselves, too. It’s understandable because we’re going to be the ones who inhabit the home for the majority of the time. We need to make sure that we’re happy with the place we’re staying in. We’ll also think about people who walk past or friends we’ll be welcoming into the place. Wanting to impress others with the things we possess is a totally natural desire.

Something we don’t really take into account, however, is what happens when our older friends and family members are invited over. Perhaps our parents or grandparents need to stay over a few times and we need to accommodate their stay. Sometimes, households are not in any way suited to their situation and the needs that they have. We’ll take their health very seriously and worry about what happens after their health screenings, but we don’t often consider our own actions and how we can contribute. Fortunately, however, making sure you can accommodate them or switch things up is actually pretty simple. Not much overthinking is required. Here are some ideas if you’re wondering:

Provide Enough Space

This is relating to one’s mentality and physicality. They’ll need space to maneuver if they’re not exactly at their most mobile anymore. They’ll also need to be able to have space to breathe – especially when they first enter your home. Nobody likes to be bombarded with walls and decorations as soon as they enter a new area. Think of ways you could create space and allow them to navigate through safely.

Make Sure The Lighting Is Good

They may not have lost their vision and other senses greatly just yet, but they’ll certainly not want to enter a place that has awful lighting. They’re going to want to see clearly and not be put off by the gloomy, dreary atmosphere. Make sure you have natural light gleaming in from wherever you can. Artificial lights will also help later on in the day, of course, so you can utilize your creativity somewhat in this department.

Watch The Noise

There is a time and a place for loud noises. We like to go to concerts, parties, and sports venues from time to time, but your home should be for relaxing – especially when you have elderly relatives over. You’ll want to ensure that they enjoy their stay, so don’t be loud and intimidating while they’re in your domain. Think about keeping the significant housework down to a minimum if you have lots of jobs to do. Asking neighbors to keep noises down if they’re not being too helpful wouldn’t be too much to ask – as awkward as it can be sometimes.

Think Of The Access

They’re not going to be as mobile as perhaps you are – if you are, indeed, able to get around quickly! You might have to think about installing a few ramps if you have an elevated home that is only accessible by steps. Think also about the stairs in your home if you have more than one floor. This may be some effort to handle as you’ll need to have new things installed onto your home, but it would be worth it in the end.

Feeling Confident And Owning Your Style

Feeling confident and owning your style isn't something you’re born with. Some people exude confidence, but that doesn’t mean they didn’t work for it. Being confident and un-self-conscious about your style can actually take a lot of self-reflection and work. Are you tired of feeling like the odd one out, or like you have to blend in to be accepted? You’re in the right place! Let’s take a look at what you can do to feel confident and own your style right now:

  1. Book A Therapy Session

If you have some deep-rooted issues and you know it, trying to work through them alone can be exhausting. However, booking a therapy session could be the key to getting rid of those insecurities - or at least understanding them better and giving yourself the power to ignore them. Therapy is powerful, and more people could use it than they realize.

Retaining Your Independence If You Have Mobility Issues

Many people have mobility issues, whether that is due to an injury or simply down to the natural wear and tear that your body experiences as you get older. Living with mobility issues is so difficult and it can sometimes feel as though you are missing out on things because your body is holding you back. A lack of independence is one of the things that people struggle with most and it’s not a good feeling when you have to rely on others to help you do everyday tasks. However, there are some simple ways that you can maintain your independence and live a full life, even if you have mobility issues.

Adapting Your Home

Many people find that, as they get older, it gets harder to move around their home and do simple things, like climbing the stairs or taking a shower. If your mobility issues make these things difficult, it is dangerous to push yourself beyond your natural limits. However, if you make some simple alterations to your home, you can make life a lot easier for yourself and maintain your independence. Things like handrails, for example, allow you to steady yourself and move around the house safely. Stairlifts and walk-in baths are another great addition to the home for people with mobility issues. By adapting your home, you can continue to live a normal life without relying on others for help.

Mobility Products

Taking trips outside the house can be daunting if you have mobility issues. If you are unable to walk very far, you are seriously limited in terms of where you can go and what you can do, and that can feel very isolating. However, if you invest in mobility products from companies like Ergoactives, you open up a whole world of new possibilities. Simple items, like canes and walkers, provide the support you need so you can stay on your feet for longer.

Social Groups

Maintaining your independence isn’t just about staying physically active. A healthy social life is so important for our mental wellbeing, but if you have mobility issues, it can be tough to maintain. Many people worry about being a burden and they don’t want friends and family to make sacrifices because of their mobility issues, so they often withdraw from social groups. It’s also harder to get out and meet people, which means that many people with mobility issues are missing out on social interaction. However, there are plenty of groups that aim to help people stay active within their community and meet new people, even if they are unable to engage in a lot of activities due to their mobility issues.

Volunteering

If your mobility issues make it difficult for you to work, this can have a big impact on your self-esteem. However, volunteering is a great way to stay active, meet new people, and give something back to the local community. Local charities are always looking for people to help out, so get in touch and see what positions they have available.

Mobility issues don’t have to define you and they don’t have to hold you back. If you follow these steps, you can retain your independence and live a full life.

Overcoming Your Fear of a Medical Procedure

Pexels - CC0 License

Not everyone is as comfortable in clinical environments as others. For some, a stay in a hospital bed (despite the misfortune that has led you there), can signify healing, being in safe hands, and perhaps hope for the future. For others, it can seem oppressive, worrying, and tiring. For most people, it’s a mixture of both, at different times.

However, it is also the case that sometimes, this intensive atmosphere is a cause of fear, and that feeling can dissuade you from getting the help you need. For instance, if you need a surgical procedure, it could be that your fear of the operation is preventing you from helping you overcome a condition lowering the quality of your life. This isn’t good for anyone. Of course, sometimes your deterrence may be a consequence of religious belief, but for most, it will be a fear that can be overcome.

Effective Ways to Improve Your Strength

If you feel as if your strength is letting you down and you’re looking to work on some ways to improve it, you’re in the right place. Working on your strength doesn’t have to mean spending hours each day at the gym. There are lots of ways to make it happen and it’s up to you to find the methods that work for you. In order to give you some ideas for how to do that and get this right, we’re going to talk through some of the options now, so keep reading.

Use the Stairs and Make the Most of Other Day to Day Opportunities

Sometimes, it’s the little things that make the biggest difference when it comes to your health and wellbeing. If you want to start making small changes that add up to big differences, you can do that by doing things such as taking the stairs rather than the elevator. Any opportunity you get to be active rather than taking the easy route should be taken, and you can improve your strength that way.

Work with a Dietitian

If you want to improve your strength or any aspect of your health for that matter, it makes sense to work with a dietitian. They’ll be able to ensure you’re eating the right kinds of foods to aid with muscle gain. Lean proteins and fish are vital for anyone trying to improve their health and if you need extra help and guidance with this, a dietitian can provide that.

Do High Intensity Sprints

High intensity sprints and workouts are really good for people looking to build strength. The intensity means that the workouts don’t need to be done for extended periods of time. But the impact will still be positive, especially for your strength. There are all kinds of high intensity workouts you can try, so find the ones that work best for you.

Work on Your Legs

Working out your legs is a good place to start if you’re looking to boost your overall strength. That’s the case because your strength is all about movement and mobility, and you’ll be able to take on other workouts better once you’ve achieved greater leg strength. Find a leg workout that works for you and get to work on those leg muscles.

Lift Weights

Finally, you should give weight lifting a go. Even if it sounds like something that’s not very appealing to you, you should give it a try. If you start slowly and lift relatively light weights, you can build up your strength over time and then increase the weight over time.

Each of the things we’ve discussed here will certainly help you to improve your strength and to work on it in an effective way. Be sure to mix things up and vary your workouts if you want to get the most out of them. You want to keep things interesting and avoid boredom setting in because that’s when problems can emerge.

The Biggest Myths People Tell You About Heart Disease

Pexels - CC0 License

Heart disease - not cancer - is the number one killer in the country, laying waste to around half a million people per year. And yet, compared to the big "C," we barely talk about it. The media will often gloss over it like it is not there.

The dialogue around heart disease is a little strange because researchers already know how to treat the condition. It doesn't involve taking any expensive medications. It's as simple as eating a healthy diet and getting a modest amount of exercise throughout your life.

Surgeons like Dr. Lindita Coku regularly have to perform operations on the heart. Often, the blood vessels supplying it get so clogged with fatty material that it impedes blood flow. Eventually, the machinery starts to break down, leading to conditions like angina.

There are a lot of myths that people tell about heart disease. Here are some of the biggest.

Myth #1: You Only Need To Worry About It When You Older

Not true - heart disease starts in children and then develops over the course of the rest of your life. Researchers know this because they performed autopsies on young American soldiers' bodies returning from the Korean War in the 1950s. When they opened them up to look inside, they noticed these yellow streaks on their arteries - the first heart disease stages.

Myth #2: I'll Know If I Have A Heart Attack Because Of Chest Pain

Heart disease is a strange condition that can manifest in a variety of ways. While it is true that some people experience chest pain, it doesn't happen to everyone. For some, the first sign that something is wrong is shortness of breath and dizziness. Other people get painful sensations in their arms and legs.

Myth #3: There Are Warning Signs For High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure is often called the "silent killer," meaning that many people who have the condition don't realize there's a problem until it's too late.

Myth #4: Cholesterol Levels Don't Matter Until You're Old

Again, this myth is wishful thinking. Your cholesterol levels do matter at any age because heart disease typically begins when people are young.

Ideally, your cholesterol should be below 160 mg/dL for the whole of your life. Whenever it starts to climb above this, you get the formation of plaques, and patients are at higher risk of developing it.

Some people can develop heart disease in their 30s and 40s if they have high cholesterol. Others have genetic conditions that predispose them to the condition.

Myth #5: A Rapid Resting Heart Rate Means You're Having A Heart Attack

A person's resting heart rate should be around 60 beats per minute, give or take a few beats here and there. So when it starts thumping more rapidly, you can worry that you're having a heart attack.

But that's not usually how it works. There are all sorts of other conditions that could lead to a quicker pulse, including anxiety. If you're worried, visit your doctor and check for arrhythmias.

Some Ways to Make Life’s Everyday Frustrations More Bearable

Pixabay CC0 License

No matter how much of a positive disposition you might naturally have, it is always going to be the case that, from time to time, things just become frustrating and feel overwhelming.

Frustrations can arise from all sorts of different sources. It might be that a job you thought you were about to be offered suddenly evaporates into thin air, or it could be that you’ve got a leaking pipe in your home that needs some urgent repair, or maybe you’ve had a fender bender.

More recently, huge numbers of people around the globe have been experiencing more everyday frustration than usual, as a result of the global pandemic.

Here are a few tips to help make life’s everyday frustrations feel more bearable.

Remember that there are often solutions to things that don’t immediately meet the eye

Every time a frustration arises in your life, it’s a good idea to take a deep breath, step back, and consciously remind yourself that there are very often solutions to things that don’t immediately meet the eye.

In other words, your first reaction to an event may be to become deeply frustrated, because you can’t think of an easy solution to whatever problem has just arisen.

Often, however, simply taking a deep breath, taking a step back, and spending a while thinking things through and doing a bit of research can yield solutions that you might have thought weren’t there at all.

If you get a traffic ticket, for example, and want to contest it without making a court appearance, a service like GetDismissed could certainly help.

Set yourself big goals that genuinely excite you, so that the “small stuff” becomes even less significant

Everyday frustrations are likely to seem much bigger and more frustrating if you don’t have much else in your everyday life to invest your attention in instead. These frustrations can then seem to grow dramatically out of proportion, and can become a lot more irritating than they otherwise would be.

A great way of altering the situation is to set yourself goals that genuinely excite you, so that the “small stuff” becomes even less significant.

Make sure that there is always some project, task, or point you are moving towards, and that you are enthusiastic about, so that you don’t get sidetracked.

Be sure to allow some time each day for fun

It’s very difficult to deal with and defuse everyday frustrations, if you are burning yourself out, and aren’t allowing at least a bit of time each day for fun, laughter, and entertainment.

If, on the other hand, you have some time set aside each day for fun activities – whether that means playing a sport, reading a good book, watching a film, playing a videogame or any number of other things, you will likely be significantly more resilient when it comes to meeting the general frustration of everyday life head on and tackling them, rather than letting them have a disproportionate impact on you.

Of course, this also means that you need to cultivate the skill of detaching yourself from things when it is time, and of “switching gears” when – for example – the work day is done.

3 Questions To Ask Your Parents' Home Carer

Caring for elderly relatives is a delicate decision. It could be heartbreaking for many adults to realize that your beloved parents, aunt, uncle, or even grandparents could be at risk if they lived alone.

Thankfully, there is a choice of options. Many families worry about care homes, especially when the COVID-19 pandemic can have devastating consequences on the senior community. Typically, care homes provide high levels of safety. However, seniors are exposed to many nurses and visitors, which means that contagion risks are high.

Therefore, you may choose to embrace home care for your relative, which allows them to maintain their independence while a professional carer comes regularly. This option enables you to reduce physical interactions that could put your relative at risk under COVID-19. But you need to make sure you can trust the nurse or professional carer to look after your relative in the best possible way. Here are 3 questions you need to ask:

Aging is, of course, inevitable. We’re always going to be getting a little older and a little weaker. Even when we’re growing our muscles and getting stronger, we’re doing so with the knowledge that it’s all temporary. We’re in a constant battle with time and the time will always win, so we need to make sure that we make the absolute most of the body we have. When you reach the latter stages of life, things do become a little slower and a lot more difficult.

They become infinitely more difficult if you accept your fate easily and give up. If you try your hardest and do what you can to keep yourself in good nick, then your later years will be a lot easier to deal with. Here are just a few things you can do to keep your body in good condition as you reach a much later stage of life:

Four Reasons To Be Strict With Medical Appointments

When it comes to your health, it’s very important that you stay on top of your health checks. We only live the one time, and none of us really know just how much time we have on earth to enjoy it! With that being said, here are four reasons to be strict with medical appointments.

They Can Help Spot Problems Early

Medical check-ups can be really help to spot problems early on before they get any worse. If you’re going to them once a year at least, then you’re going to have that peace of mind that you’re being active in going regularly enough. It’s medical professionals like TBI Imaging Associates who rely on patients spotting those symptoms so that they can help find out what’s wrong. It’s good to be paying attention to your body and what might not seem right. We’re all aware of when we feel a little bit off, and this could be a clear sign that’s something’s wrong. It’s better to be safe than sorry and to get it checked out as soon as it happens. Catching problems early could really make a difference, especially when it comes to those life-threatening medical conditions and illnesses.

Life’s Too Short To Feel Anything Other Than Your Usual Self

Life is full of adventures and fun, but when you’re not feeling well, it can really dampen those occasions. It’s important that you’re going for medical health checks regularly so that you can continue to live life fully. There’s nothing fun about having to sit through a concert with a banging headache or trying to enjoy a social gathering with back pain. Regardless of what it is you’re suffering from, pain should be a temporary thing. Life is too short to feel anything different other than your normal self, and that’s why it’s good to keep an eye on how you feel.

Work & Social Life Can Get Busy

Work and social life can become a busy hub of activity for many of us. Whether we love our jobs and work overtime or we spend all our spare moments with friends and family, those hours in the day can soon get taken up. However, it’s important you’re making time for your medical appointments regardless. It’s also essential that you’re going to your medical appointments when they’re scheduled in and that you’re not putting them off. With the increase in population, just getting an appointment can be difficult. Therefore, it’s good to stick to your schedule, especially with busy social and work calendars.

Encourages Others

We tend to look to one another for support and advice. That’s why it’s good to go to medical appointments as it helps encourages others who may avoid them. You should be a role model to any children you may have, family members, work colleagues and friends. Set an example and encourage others to take priority over their health.

Medical checks are essential, so use these tips to ensure you’re getting the help and support you need.

Why Your Marriage Needs A Five-Year Pit Stop

The first five to ten years of a marriage can change the nature of your relationship with your spouse to some pretty surprising degrees. It might not change exactly how much you love each other or your devotion to one another, but it can definitely change how your life operates from day to day, as well as future plans that you might have previously talked about. For that reason, we’re going to look at conversations you should have with your spouse during a pitstop after at least five years.

What are your goals for life?

One of the big misconceptions is that after you have had some time to achieve your goals or found that some are no longer important to you, you are likely to simply rest on your laurels. Congratulations are in order if you have reached those goals but you are likely to find out that you have different priorities, now. You and your spouse might not be able to support each other as effectively as you otherwise could if you’re simply not telling each other about what your aims are for the future. Talk about where you see yourself and where they see themselves in five years and whether that matches up with your current trajectory.

Are things going okay financially?

At this stage, you and your partner should have some sort of financial system in place. Now is the time to look at that financial system once again. This can include, of course, how you’re spending your money, but might also include how your finances are organized and who holds the purse strings on different accounts. How much are you putting towards savings? Do you have any financial goals and have you been putting enough money towards them to meet them within a set timeframe? It’s easy to get sensitive about money and how one handles it, so it’s important to address this question as a cooperative effort, first and foremost, so that it doesn’t sound accusatory.

Your working lives

This topic might end up getting rolled up into the conversation about your finances, but the question of who works, how their career is going, and what can be done incorporates more than just the financial side of life. It’s also about individual goals, the importance of being able to spend your time productively, and more. Have a talk about who is working and whether they want to work (or have to, as the case may be). For those who are working, it may be worth taking the time to talk about their career, its trajectory, and options they might have to get it moving int the way they want, whether that’s by searching for new roles or by looking at development potential through training.

Is it time to start planning for a baby?

It’s very likely that the topic of children has come up, as most couples tend to make sure they’re on the same page regarding that before they even get married. However, that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t take the time to talk about having your first child if you currently have none. Is it time to take the step to actively try? Are you as ready as you can be, financially and in terms of having a stable home life? Or have expectations of children changed for one or both of you? Even if you have both agreed beforehand that you do not want children, it’s still wise to take the time to check in with your partner and your own feelings.

Do you have enough kids?

If you have, in fact, had children already or you both find that you are resolute that you don’t want any more, then you might want to look at the possibility of closing the door for any children in the future. It doesn’t need to be a formal decision, you can both practice safe sex, but there is also the option for a surgical option. Take the time to research how painful is a vasectomy as well as what the long-term effects are. If you’re done having kids, it’s the most accessible answer, but it does need a lot of preparation and cooperation.

How are you raising your children?

Whether you already have children or you plan to have them in future, you need to talk more about the process of actually making them. It’s important to check-in on what kind of parents you want to be and what you’re doing to make that a reality. This means not only looking at you provide and nurture for them. You need to talk about plans to deal with issues like misbehavior, discipline, bullying, and more. If you have two different parenting strategies in mind, this can lead to major tensions down the line so it’s important to see where you line up and find a compromise if it’s not an exact match.

How do you argue productively?

Is it possible for anything but bad to come out of an argument? The answer is: yes. Arguments are how we sort out disputes and conflicts within relationships and an argument doesn’t necessarily have to be an emotional and hurtful process. If you need some sort of the change in your relationship, it’s important to be able to address it calmly, without making the other feel attacked, or without getting defensive if you or your behavior is the subject of the conversation. More importantly, you should look at whether you make some of the biggest mistakes when arguing with a partner, such as criticising them, acting with contempt, being defensive and taking personally, or stonewalling them when they’re trying to talk.

You might find during your pitstop that your relationship with your partner, your life, your needs, and your wants for the future haven’t changed that much. If that’s the case, then that is fantastic. However, it’s important to have these conversations anyway to make sure that there aren’t any issues that could grow under the surface if left unaddressed.
